Buying an Engagement Ring: Select a Style That Reflects You

Whether you prefer a sleek and modern design or something more traditional, our guide helps you explore all the different options. Browse through engagement rings in white gold, yellow gold, or platinum to find your perfect fit.

Select the Perfect Shape Before You Buy an Engagement Ring

Choosing a diamond shape is just as important as picking the metal. Round, marquise, cushion, princess, emerald, pear, or oval—each diamond shape offers a different level of brilliance and fits differently on your finger. Explore these options to find the shape that best suits you.

Find The Ideal Metal for Your Engagement Ring Purchase

The right metal makes all the difference in the overall look of your engagement ring. From white gold and yellow gold to platinum and two-tone options, Sylvie offers a variety of choices to fit your style. The metal you choose should complement your diamond and reflect your personal taste and lifestyle.

Customize Your Ring

At Sylvie, we believe in creating engagement rings as unique as your love story. Our customization process allows you to design a one-of-a-kind ring that reflects your individuality and passion.

Simply let your chosen Sylvie authorized retailer know that you’d like to customize your engagement ring. From there, the retailer will connect with our team to gather the details of your desired style and custom features. Once we have your vision, we’ll create a 3D CAD rendering for your approval, ensuring every detail is perfect. After your final approval, our artisans will craft your custom ring, which will be sent to your retailer for you to pick up.

The 4 C’s of Diamond Buying

Cut

The cut of a diamond is perhaps the most important factor when it comes to its brilliance and radiance. A diamond’s cut refers to the proportions, angles, and finish of its facets. A "well-cut" diamond will reflect light internally from one facet to another before dispersing it through the top, also known as the table. This reflection gives the diamond its signature sparkle, also known as fire or brilliance. The more finely proportioned the diamond, the more it will dazzle. When buying an engagement ring, it’s vital to prioritize a well-cut diamond for maximum brilliance.

Color

Although many diamonds contain some color, the most valuable diamonds are those that are closest to colorless. The GIA color grading scale starts with the letter D (completely colorless) and continues through Z, where diamonds have noticeable yellow or brown hues. Diamonds are graded by comparing them to stones of known color under controlled lighting and precise conditions. When buying engagement rings, selecting a diamond closer to the colorless range ensures a more radiant and visually appealing stone.

Clarity

Clarity measures a diamond’s purity by assessing the presence of internal inclusions or external blemishes. The GIA Clarity Scale consists of 11 grades, ranging from Flawless (no visible imperfections under 10x magnification) to Included (inclusions visible to the naked eye). Most diamonds used in engagement rings fall between the VS (Very Slightly Included) and SI (Slightly Included) categories. While imperfections are typically microscopic and invisible to the naked eye, clarity impacts the overall beauty and value of the diamond.

Carat

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond and is often one of the most noticeable characteristics. One carat equals 200 milligrams or one-fifth of a gram. Larger diamonds are generally more valuable, but the other three C’s (cut, color, and clarity) also play significant roles in the diamond’s overall quality. When purchasing an engagement ring, it’s important to balance carat weight with the other C’s to ensure the diamond has the right combination of size and quality.
